Born in Batuan village, Bali, 1979, Made Griyawan grew up in an art environment of Batuan painting, – a traditional artistic style passed down through the generations in Bali. Besides the very supportive environmental factors, Griyawan has inherited his artistic talent from his father who was also a painter, I Wayan Taweng. Through him, Griyawan began to study the technique and philosophy of Batuan painting.
Although mastering the traditional technique that upholds many of rules, Griyawan never fails to perform variety of stylistic developments to enrich his painting. A common theme in his paintings is a journey to back to reach the light, and the introduction of his real character as an artist.
In one painting, Griyawan just portrays the water alone, something thats considered unusual within the Batuan art community. This has caused debate among his piers that Griyawan’s style is not considered Batuan, but it is nevertheless become an inspiration to the young painters in his village.
