The Truth and Facts about GMOs
What is a GMO?
As quoted from Wikipedia.org, a GMO is “A genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Although labeling of genetically modified organism (GMO) products in the marketplace is required in 64 countries, it is not required in the United States and no distinction between marketed GMO and non-GMO foods is recognized by the US FDA.”
Why did our agricultural industry go GMO?
The technology behind Genetically Modified Organisms was created to feed the growing world food demand. GMO was introduced for the mega-interest of mass production and factory farming. It was thought of as the world savior and dream come true…the main idea for it was that the world’s food would finally be protected from pestilence and sickness. In 1994 the first GMO Tomato, called the “Flavr Savr” was introduced to groceries stores across the United States, claiming a longer ripened shelf life.
